The Organisers have defined three main objectives for the Conference:

  1. To present the latest scientific progress in the field of waste water treatment in small communities. To this end, scientists of recognised international prestige will be attending the event, where they will be able to exchange knowledge and debate the future of research in the field. In this way, Smallwat will be a forum that will encourage reflection and the study of sanitation in general and, in particular, sanitation and waste water treatment in small disperse communities and rural areas.

  2. To make public the degree of compliance with the Water Framework Directive and the seventh Millennium Development Goal through the analysis of both the successes achieved and the setbacks suffered. It is a question of addressing a challenge that requires an integrated focus which takes into account the needs and interests of the different stakeholders involved and the appropriate mechanisms of governance, a challenge that must be met through a multidisciplinary, multilateral approach in the form of sustainable strategies which guarantee sufficient quantity and quality of water.

  3. To propose the creation of a Network of Experimental Centres for small communities.
